FAQS

WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING MY INITIAL SESSION?

I see our first session as an opportunity to figure out whether we can work well together. Typically I like to keep things informal and try to put you at ease. We can spend 40-45 minutes talking about the difficulties you are having and what has brought you to therapy. You can speak freely about whatever feels relevant or anything that's on your mind. If you are nervous or struggle to talk about yourself I can ask you questions and help you express yourself. You don't need to tell me everything in the first session and I wont push you to talk about anything that feels too personal or difficult to talk about. You can ask me any question you have about me or the therapy and I will do my best to answer fully. If you feel you want to continue, we would then spend the rest of the session agreeing a plan for moving forward. If, you are still unsure at the end of the session, you can leave and have a think about it before getting back in touch.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

This varies depending on the nature of your difficulties and what you want to achieve. On average my clients see me for 18-24 sessions over a period of 6-8 months. As I see it, a major advantage of private therapy is the ability to work through an issue to completion rather than being limited by a set number of sessions. I can work with you to ensure that therapy is affordable and sustainable for you. Together we can come to an agreement that allows us to work consistently until you feel your reason for coming has been resolved.

DO YOU SPECIALISE IN MY PARTICULAR PROBLEM?

Primarily I am a relational therapist and take a holistic approach to my clients. Broadly speaking this means I treat the person and not their 'problem' or 'disorder'. While I have a wide range of training and knowledge, I do not consider myself to be an expert or specialist in any particular client group. I am skilled in offering genuine authentic relationships with others and prefer to use my human skills over technical skills. I believe that many of the difficulties we face have their roots in our interpersonal relationships and historic relational patterns. Therefore these principles can help resolve the root cause of all kinds of distress and suffering, regardless of their presentation.
